There are two types of cellular phones. The first is Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and the second is the Global System for Mobiles (GSM). These are two different cellular phone technologies. CDMA based cellular phones are provided by service providers are locked for life. This means that you can’t use them with any other service provider. Therefore CDMA phones cannot be unlocked.

GSM based phones offer you the ability to change service providers through the use of Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card. The reason they do this is because they want you to use their service exclusively since they earn money through roaming charges when you travel into regions that are out of their service range. However, these cellular phones may also be unlocked. In fact, most GSM service providers will unlock your cellular phone upon request.

If you own a GSM cellular phone, there are ways to get it unlocked. The process of unlocking a cellular phone is dependent on the service provider and the cellular phone hand set model. The cellular phone can be unlocked by entering a specific code that can be supplied by the service provider, by the service provider, or on the air. There are some cellular phone companies that will only unlock your cellular phone after the initial contract that you signed with them has expired. Usually, after your cellular phone is unlocked it will stay unlocked. The first thing you need to do is determine if your GSM cellular phone is locked. Many cellular phones have a microchip or SIM card which stores subscriber data. This SIM card is issued by the service provider and provides cellular service by activating any phone that it is inserted into. However, a cellular phone that is locked will only recognize a SIM card that is from a particular service provider. An unlocked cellular phone recognizes a SIM card from any other service provider. The software that keeps a cellular phone locked keeps the cellular phone tied to one service provider.

In locations such as the US where the service providers offer discounted or even free cellular phones with their cellular service plans, the cellular phones are usually locked so that they will not work with other service providers. The service providers claim that this is needed in order to subsidize the cost of their cellular phones.

Following some period of time, a service provider may agree to unlock the cellular phone if requested to do so but may charge a fee. As a result of proprietary settings that are may be installed on a locked handset, the cellular phone won’t always function properly with other service providers, even once they are unlocked. Cellular phones should be unlocked following the expiration of the first contract with the user or ideally left unlocked.

One way to have your cellular phone unlocked is to buy it new from a third party vendor in its unlocked, original condition. However, you can expect to pay full retail for the cellular phone. Cellular phones that are locked are tied to the annual contracts that work in favor of the service providers for numerous reasons. One of these reasons is that the real cost of a cellular phone is lost in the service provider’s two year contracts. While all of the iPhones have sold out, they were going for $799 each and it is still the first time that US customers have had the opportunity to easily purchase an Apple iPhone that is unlocked. There’s nothing illegal about any of this. These Internet retailer’s deals are obtained by importing iPhones from other countries, and these phones were probably purchased in from Taiwan or Belgium, where it is a matter of routine business to sell an unlocked iPhone.

This is still a great deal for consumers who want to be able to carry their cellular phones to the service provider that provides them with the best service. If you want to purchase an unlocked iPhone, keep watching the online retailers because they will undoubtedly get more iPhones in. If only Apple would sell their iPhones unlocked as a routine matter of business it could really make for a better US cellular phone industry. However, with the profits of the service providers being what they are don’t expect this to happen any time soon.

The four main types of business telephone systems (key telephone systems, private branch exchange telephone systems (PBX), KSU-less telephone systems and voice over internet protocol) all provide the same basic function (i.e. to make and receive telephone calls), but there are significant differences between them. If you need a telephone system for your business, then it is worthwhile learning about each of the systems available to ensure that you get the one that is best suited to your particular circumstances.

Private Branch Exchange Telephone Systems (PBX) – This is the system of choice for large businesses, as it is built to deal with fifty-plus extensions and is relatively easy to customize and upgrade. If your company has a lot of employees then this will be the most efficient telephone system for you to use. However, the fact that it is the best system also means that it is the most expensive one.

Key Telephone Systems – This is a good choice for small businesses who have between ten and fifty employees. However, even if you have less than ten employees, you should still consider this telephone system because it is cost-effective and easy to install / maintain. It is not difficult to expand this system (it can also be combined with a PBX system) if needs be too.

Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) – This telephone system works over the Internet. You basically connect your phone directly into your computer. Features include number portability, voicemail and call waiting with caller ID. It is perfect for small businesses with limited numbers of employees but is impractical for larger businesses.

KSU-Less Telephone Systems – This is the most common type of telephone system in use which is testament to the fact that it provides what most small businesses need. It is not particularly easy to upgrade, which is its only real drawback.

So, which telephone system is right for you is dependent on the size of your business and your budget. Prices will vary so it always pays to shop around. You can normally get the best deals by looking online, so that should be your starting point. You should be wary of only basing your decision on price though, as some telephone system manufacturers / service providers are much better than others.
