Another of the great debates in the area of internet marketing revolves around the "safe" speed at which to build backlinks.
There's a school of concept that states that Google loves natural, organic link building, which means that it doesn't look natural if a thousand links appear quickly for your blog (which you DO tend to get when using some type of article spinning software together with an automatic submission routine), and then a dearth where you notice virtually none. Another aspect of this natural, organic link building is to generate links from various different sources: article directories, web 2.0 properties, forums, other websites, personal blogs, etc.
This then, leads to a perception that says that it's wise to moderate your link building. Do it in calculated steps (that would lead one to naturally shy away from article spinners) to stay under Google's RADAR, and slowly increase your links over time. Some people out and out cite a figure: "Don't add over ten new links a day" or "Anything under 50 and you will be fine." That kind of thing. At the end of the day though, whatever number is mentioned, the main line of reasoning is the same. If you add numerous links to the system, you'll have the chance of winding up in Google's 'sandbox,' and irrespective of how many links you build, you will not rank well until your time in the penalty box is up.
Now, Google hasn't out and out admitted to the presence of a 'sandbox,' but there's some strong reasoning to this argument. Once more, it's best to be safe than sorry, and I think that this usually careful approach is the main reason why the "drip feed" approach to link building appears to be the powerful approach on the web at present, and if you research your websites, you can mostly see patterns (for example, you'll often see a "Google Dance" on your sites right after a major link building push as the system digests a number of newly discovered back links--often made worse through article spinners-- and does whatever it does to ascertain how this impacts your overall rankings state).
