It's surprising when you realize that people usually believe we are strange if we consider having a child anywhere but in a healthcare facility as natural childbirth used to be the sole way of child delivery. A home birth was anything but exclusive. Then, things transformed. Ironically, this didn't mean much for women or their infants, who usually fared better in the house compared to in some of the first nursing homes. Earlier hospitals often had higher infant mortality rates and much more mothers who died in child birth, even a century ago, in much bigger numbers than mothers attended to at home with midwives.
Clearly, medical practice has transformed a lot since the first days of labor and delivery in a few of those first nursing homes, however, many things truly haven't. When you line up all the figures on home birth versus hospital births, natural childbirth is still safer for the majority of mothers and newborns.
Yes, in a few instances, it likely is better to have mom give birth in the hospital. This can be because the birth is risky or for the reason that mom is expecting multiples. High risk pregnancy may include a mother with preeclampsia or diabetic issues, or a child who is preterm. A home birth might also not be the best choice if mom has hypertension. For the majority of mothers, however, a home birth is a good alternative.
Natural childbirth provides alternatives which not all nursing homes may offer. Usually, mothers have more liberty regarding things like moving around and taking their time, whereas, at a medical center, mom may be confined to a bed, sometimes even buckled in. Being confined in such a manner often itself causes a delay in labor. Based on what time a year mother goes into labor, the hospital might not permit certain visitors to the labor room. For example in some spring months, when the risk of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is greater, visitors are usually limited to adults only. RSV brings up one more serious problem of hospital stays which is infection. Infection is probably the leading causes of complications and even death in America's hospitals.
The point is that hospital stays, whilst at times necessary, expose both mother and newborn to numerous unnecessary hazards and can often limit mom's options for her own labor and delivery.
There are, of course, other factors which make natural births a much better option too. Research in the British Medical Journal discovered that a "planned home births for low risk women in America are associated with similar safety and less medical intervention as low risk hospital births".
Overall, a natural childbirth is usually a safer option than a hospital birth and provide mom alternatives that she may, actually, not even get in the hospital, not the least of which is a safe birth, surrounded by the people she loves.
